I am SO excited to be writing this post (and will probably write more on it in the future).
Today, it was 74-92 degrees in Dallas. Tomorrow, the high is 100. That means, its HOT IN HURRR, and the sun has it out for y'all.
General tips I reiterate to patients approximately 1000x daily to keep your skin safe:
- wear sunscreen- 30 SPF or greater. Wear it every damn day. Yup, even when its cloudy or raining. Even if you're just walking to and from your car, you're getting a good dose of UV and over time, that's going to contribute to wrinkles, skin discoloration, and (more importantly), skin cancer. Importantly, RE-APPLY sunscreen every few hours, more often if getting wet and wild.
- try to avoid the sun during "peak hours"- we say 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. standard time or 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. daylight savings time, but its going to vary depending on where you are. Here in Texas, you're getting hefty doses of UV exposure even at 5 or 6pm.
- hint- topic of this article- WEAR SUN PROTECTIVE CLOTHING!!! A white cotton shirt provides only 5-8 SPF, so your normal long sleeve shirt ain't cutting it.
Sun protective clothing does its job by the way the fibers are spun (TIGHT!) and additional processing (e.g. addition of Zinc oxide or other UV blockers). They are lifesavers as you can put them on and then not have to think about re-applying throughout the day. Most people think sun protective clothing is only for the beach. But we are SO far beyond that now! From cute workout pants and classy cover ups to full on fancy dresses, I've got you covered. I've put together some of my favorite sun protective finds, prices ranging from more affordable to higher end. Some lines, like Coolibar and Mott50, have SPF in EVERY piece they offer (yaaaas!). Lastly, and super-super cool, you can wash current long sleeves/pants with SunGuard and get a hefty UPF.
Hats are also important because your they protect YOUR FACE. They help PREVENT WRINKLES AND CANCER. So I don't care if you don't like hats, WEAR ONE. And as you see below, they can be super chic. Believe me, you'll get compliments. And you'll smile, knowing your look is as hot as the weather.
